Probiotics are dietary supplements containing living microrganisms, designed to modify the balance of the bacterial flora of the gastrointestinal tract. The best-studied probiotics are the lactic acid bacterial strains Lactobacillus acidophilus (preferentially colonizing the small intestine) and Bifidobacterium lactis (preferentially colonizing the large intestine), which are components of the natural intestinal flora.
What does Bio-Culture do? Probiotic supplements increase the levels of specific non-pathogenic bacteria which are already naturally present within the gastrointestinal tract. Increasing the population of such bacteria promotes monopolisation of available nutrient resources and epithelial binding sites against other types of microorganisms.
About Pharma Nord Bio-Culture Pharma-Nord Bio-Culture contains two freeze-dried strains of lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis, within a capsule containing an acid resistant gel matrix. The capsule is dissolved by acid in the stomach, but the viability of the bacteria is maintained by the protective gel, which in turn dissolves in the small intestine to release the probiotic bacteria. Each Bio-Culture capsule guarantees at least 4 billion live bacteria, and is designed to be stable at room temperature. Many commercial probiotic formulations need to be stored in a refrigerator (inconvenient for travelers), contain relatively few viable bacteria (typically 0.1-2 billion), or are inactivated by the adverse environment of the stomach (before reaching the intestines).
Bio-Culture capsules are manufactured under Danish pharmaceutical control and packed in an hermetically sealed tube, to maintain viability and prolong shelf life once opened. Bio-Culure is GLUTEN-free, lactose-free and MSG (monosodium glutamate)-free, and suitable for vegetarians.
Are there any adverse effects from taking Bio-Culture Oral administration of probiotics is well tolerated and safe. There are no reported adverse effects, and no known risk of overdose. Probiotics can be taken by pregnant and lactating women.
How much should you take? Pharma Nord recommends 1 capsule 3 times per day, or as directed by a physician.
There is no UK Recommended Daily Allowance for probiotics. Levels of naturally occurring probiotic lactic acid bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract decrease with age, and are reduced following the intake of alcohol and certain medicines.
