Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin mainly obtained from plant sources, such as unrefined vegetable oils, wholegrains, nuts and seeds, as well as from liver and eggs. Since many of the best dietary sources of vitamin E are foods associated with a high fat content, individuals on low fat diets are recommended to obtain their vitamin E requirement via dietary supplements. Vitamin E (natural or synthetic) can occur in different chemical forms (principally alpha-, beta-, delta- and gamma tocopherols), which have different biological activity; the most effective form of vitamin E utilized by the human body is d-alpha-tocopherol.
What does Bio-E-Vitamin do? The major function of vitamin E is as an antioxidant. It is the major lipid soluble antioxidant stabilizing cell membranes, protecting membrane polyunsaturated fatty acid components from attack by damaging free radicals. Free radicals are harmful molecules generated as unwanted by-products of normal metabolism within the body, as well as following exposure to environmental chemical pollutants. In addition to its role in cell membrane repair, vitamin E helps to maintain a healthy cardiovascular function, by protecting LDL cholesterol against oxidative damage.
About Pharma Nord Bio-E-Vitamin Each capsule of Bio-E-Vitamin contains 200IU (134mg) of d-alpha tocopherol.
Bio-E-Vitamin is produced under Danish pharmaceutical control. The preparation is blister packed for maximum bio-availability.
Are there any adverse effects from taking Bio-E-Vitamin? Vitamin E is generally well tolerated, but may rarely cause gastrointestinal disturbance or headaches. Vitamin E has a low toxicity, and supplementation with vitamin E in clinical trials has an excellent safety record; a dose of 1000 IU/ day is considered to be completely safe and without side effects. Patients taking anticoagulants or with vitamin K deficiency may have increased risk of bleeding with high doses of vitamin E.
How much should you take? Pharma Nord recommends 1 capsule per day or as directed by a physician.
The UK Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamin E is 10mg/day, equivalent to 15 International Units (IU)) of vitamin E activity. However the RDA above equates to the minimum intake required to prevent deficiency. In terms of optimum intake of vitamin E, the European Federation of Health Product Manufacturers recommends a daily intake of 900 IU/day. Levels of vitamin E are reduced by smoking and drinking alcohol, and decline with age. Diets containing a high proportion of fish oils or polyunsaturated fatty acids may result in deficient vitamin E absorption.
